An interesting item popped up on last night’s standing committee agenda, under the usually mundane section for alley closures. The surrounding property owner was requesting closure of an alleyway east of Aylmer, just south of Riverside. The alley turns out the be the remnant right of way of what was known as Stuart Street. I’ve taken a quick look and can’t locate any maps showing Stuart Street, so it’s possible it was plotted out, but never built. On the 1937 Fire Map shown above, I’ve marked the area in question in red. I took at drive past last night to capture it, in case it is closed. Interesting to note, the large vacant lot on Riverside Drive was listed as a main reason to deny the closure, as that hunk of property is listed as being owned by Her Majesty the Queen. I can’t figure out for the life of me, what was on that land previously to make it crown land. It looks like it was already vacant in 1937 according to the Fire Map.
If you’re interested, the report can be found here, starting on page 211.

Andrew,
If you are interested I can send you the sheet from the 1896 revised 1909 Fire Insurance Map that shows a Fire Station on that property. (I believe I am looking at the same area as you.)
Hi Heather,
That would be great.
Thanks!
